A day, filmed
One a client shot on their own outing, and one of ours.
Why it works
A sailboat is a forcing function.
Put six colleagues on a 35-footer and give them a start line, and within twenty minutes you will learn more about how that team communicates than a year of standups would tell you. There are only so many jobs, and somebody has to take each one.
Responsible for everything forward of the mast. Calls the boat onto the start line, sets up the headsails and the spinnaker, and works the sharp end through every turn.
The person who volunteers for bow is the one who takes the messy job so nobody else has to.
Works the port winch. Grinds the headsail on as the boat turns onto port, then eases it off again on the next turn.
The two trimmers swap roles every time the boat turns. Pairs who talk find the rhythm in about three tacks. Pairs who do not are still fighting it at the finish.
The mirror image on the other winch. One trimmer is always pulling on while the other is easing off, and the sail is between them.
Nobody can do this job alone, which is rather the point of putting it in the middle of the cockpit.
Holds the biggest sail, and with it most of the power and most of the balance. Adjusts the vang and the backstay as the wind changes.
Usually the first person to feel a wind shift, and often the last to mention it unless asked.
Decides which side of the course to take and when to turn. Reads the fleet and the tide, and calls every tack and gybe.
Has to convince five other people quickly, with incomplete information. Nowhere to hide.
Steers the course tactics calls. Everything the rest of the crew does arrives here as feel through the wheel.
The quietest person on the boat often turns out to be the best helm. It happens constantly.

From, per person
Nobody needs sailing experience. Every boat has a licensed skipper aboard who teaches as you go and keeps it safe. The people who want to drive will drive; the people who want to sit in the sun and heckle can do that, and the boat goes just as fast.
